A friend forwarded me the link to this Comic Book Resources forum thread, wherein Ethan Van Sciver, best known for extremely detailed drawings in comical books and for deciding that Green Lanterns all have a little Lantern logo made out of energy floating in front of their chests, pontificates on matters political and economical.
It is always interesting to see a comics professional reveal themselves as a right-wing nabob, but my favorite bit comes when, after Van Sciver asserts that the United States is a good place to live in terms of having a high degree of social mobility and people rapidly point out that compared to most other first-world nations the USA actually is notso-hotso on the social mobility scale, that he resorts to sarcasm and moving the goalposts.
Still, I would encourage Van Sciver to blather some more about his political and economic philosophies, because he has a long way to go before he can catch up to the likes of John Byrne or (glory hallelujah!) Dave Sim. YOU CAN DO IT, LITTLE TROOPER!

Although I find a lot of the new non-club-improv-comedy-anywhere scene to be kind of sickly attention-seeking, I have to concede that sometimes they are really quite awfully clever.

No, seriously. It’s quite possibly the single most witless thing David Brooks has ever written, and given that this is David Brooks that is saying something.

Okay, so right now there’s only the inaugural post, but you should all bookmark Andrew Wheeler’s new blog because Wheeler is a great writer and funny man and he deserves success. Not as much success as me, obviously, but, you know. Success.

A collection of Polish movie posters (as in “Polish posters for Hollywood movies”, not “posters for Polish movies”).
Seeing these reminds me of an old exhibition of hand-painted African posters for Hollywood movies; the artists took a lot of liberties (I notably remember a poster for The Empire Strikes Back where C-3P0 was wearing a tutu for some reason) but they invariably made the movies seem even more interesting than they were. “Repostering” strikes me as the sort of thing that could easily become the next big Internet trend…

CONTROVERSY as this week’s TV column, rather than having the traditional dichotomy of five images, has FOUR images with the American Idol bit taking up two of five slots (because it is on twice during the week). Begin discussing how much Simon Cowell paid me to do this… right now!
